Pakistan’s ruling party plans to appoint the brother of ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as his successor to fight in the 2018 general elections, local media reported on Saturday.
Shahbaz Sharif, the chief minister of the vast Punjab province, will first need to be elected to the national assembly to qualify as a candidate.
Nawaz Sharif resigned on Friday, hours after the country’s Supreme Court ordered a probe into him and his family, over undeclared assets. His party, the Pakistan Muslim League, is expected to name an interim prime minister, who will hold the post for a 45-day period or until next year’s elections.
