Known for its sandy beaches and resort-lined coasts, Hainan Province has long been promoted as China's Hawaii. Starting May 1st, passport holders from the UK, the US, Canada and scores of other European and Asian countries, will be able to visit the island without a visa, and stay for as long as 30 days. Our Xing Ruinan tells us more.
The first group of visa-free tourists from South Korea has arrived at Sanya Phoenix International Airport. China has extended visa-free access to Hainan to 59 nations. And these 159 tourists are enjoying their travel privileges.
MR. RYU SOUTH KOREAN TOURIST "We'll go to the beach and Monkey Island, and watch a local performance. The visa-free policy is very convenient. It saves us lots of time when it comes to applying for a visa."
Hainan, roughly the size of Switzerland, received a package of economic policies after President Xi visited the area earlier in April. The proposals are paving the way for horse racing, sports lotteries and expanded duty-free shopping. Foreigners travelling in other parts of the country will generally need to arrange visas beforehand. But visiting the island is now easier than ever.
TIAN HUIFENG, DEPUTY DIRECTOR MEILAN EXIT & ENTRY IMMIGRATION INSPECTION "Tourists must submit their declaration information through a Hainan local travel agency 24 hours in advance before their trip. And if they want to leave Hainan for other places in China during the trip, they will have to apply for a visa."
The tropical province seeks to spur economic growth and boost popularity among foreign tourists. Tourist sites and travel agencies on the island are stepping up efforts to develop public facilities and provide quality services.
ZHENG CONGHUI, DEPUTY MANAGER TIANYA-HAIJIAO TOURISM CORPORATION "We'll put up multi-language signs and prepare travel guidance. Besides, we'll recruit tourist guides of various languages."
Hainan may have a long way to go to become an international tourism destination. But it is finding its place in the country's economic and tourist landscape. XRN, CGTN.
