Pictures provoke a range of emotions, from smiles to tears. They can also preserve memories, by showing us landmarks and people from our past. British photographer Thomas Child was able to do all of that and much more.
In 1870, armed with a camera, he moved from England to China where he accepted a job as an engineer. He isn’t remembered for his engineering work instead, he’s treasured for the 200 images he took of 19th Century China – images that captured a changing country struggling with internal challenges and external conflicts.

CGTN America’s Mike Walter visited an exhibit in New York City that celebrated the unique images of China captured by Thomas Child and brought together two people whose connection is just as much part of Child’s legacy as his photography.
