China-US Tariffs: Auto Impact
[]
A possible trade war could jeopardize sales of American cars in China. The US has long had a vehicle trade surplus with China.
Last year, China overall imported more than 1.2 million cars - worth 500-billion US dollars. More than 20% were from the US, amounting to 130-billion US dollars. But cars exported from China to the US totaled 14-billion dollars last year, giving the US a trade surplus of 110 billion dollars. The two countries are the world's largest automotive markets.
They've been cooperating in vehicle development and exchanging technical information, environment studies, and technology demonstrations. With tariffs, big automakers such as Tesla and GM could be hit.
