Cooperation between China and the U.S. in the healthcare sector continues on a smooth track despite recent trade disputes involving the two countries. China's Luye Medical Group has just announced a collaboration with America's prestigious Cleveland Clinic to improve medical treatment for Chinese patients. Zheng Junfeng has more on the cooperation that transcends politics.
China-U.S. medical cooperation has produced a new outcome. America's No. 2 hospital Cleveland Clinic is making a foray into China for the first time. The well-regarded hospital is teaming up with the Luye Medical Group, by sharing its practices and technology.
TOM MIHALJEVIC, PRESIDENT & CEO CLEVELAND CLINIC "The market potential is enormous here in China, especially in our specialised areas including heart surgery, urology, and gastroenterology. There are just a lot of opportunities for cooperation."
Luye is a leading Chinese medical group with 20 years of experience in the healthcare sector. Luye plans to build a Cleveland Clinic Connected hospital in Shanghai with a 2 billion yuan investment.
LIU DIANBO, CHAIRMAN & PRESIDENT LUYE LIFE SCIENCES GROUP "The hospital will bring the best medical practices to Chinese patients. By collaborating with Cleveland, we will bring here their 120 treatment processes, and more importantly, their advanced hospital management system."
Industry analysts say that the cooperation between China and the U.S. in health care hasn't been affected by recent trade tensions that have seen both countries levy heavy duties on billions of dollars of each other's goods. China has just reduced tariffs on dozens of cancer drugs to zero and imported its first batch of 9-valent HPV vaccine from the United States.
SHIH-HUNG CHEN, CHINA REPRESENTATIVE U.S. COOPERATIVE FOR INTL' PATIENT PROGRAMS "Medicine is something everyone in the world needs. Medicine transcends a lot of politics around the world because healthcare is about care, care of people, no matter you are from the U.S. or China."
The Luye Group and the Cleveland Clinic expressed confidence in a long-term cooperation no matter what economic relations might be.
LIU DIANBO, CHAIRMAN & PRESIDENT LUYE LIFE SCIENCES GROUP "Medical practices by their nature are without boundaries. They are shared globally. This is because they are meant to cure people, straight and simple. So international medical cooperation is very common."
TOM MIHALJEVIC, PRESIDENT & CEO CLEVELAND CLINIC "I firmly believe that medical cooperation is here to stay. Medical cooperation always finds its own way to what matters, that's the health of our patients."
ZHENG JUNFENG CGTN "Experts say medical science is about saving lives and is beyond borders. China is working with the U.S., Japan and many other countries in medical research and cooperation, and the experts say that such cooperation shouldn't and won't be interrupted by trade disputes. Zheng Junfeng, CGTN."
