Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday called for more stable, rapid and sound development of bilateral relations during his meeting with British Prime Minister Theresa May on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Hamburg.
Britain is seeking to further fresh relationships across the world in the post-Brexit era, and a UK government source told The Times that May had been encouraged by the strength of the Chinese president's enthusiasm for tightening economic ties with Britain.
President Xi told May the two countries can enhance cooperation in finance and nuclear energy sectors, as well as promote people-to-people exchanges.
Britain will aim to expand cooperation with China in such fields as trade, investment, culture, and security, as well as closely communicate and coordinate on international and regional hotspot issues, May added.
The leaders are also reported to have discussed the surplus of steel in world markets, with a British official telling journalists that May urged China to do more to address the problem. Xi said all countries must take "concerted action" to deal with overproduction.
