December 2016 saw a landmark moment in China-Africa relations. That's when Chinese President Xi Jinping met Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba. The two leaders agreed to build closer relations. Ahead of the China-Africa cooperation forum in September, CGTN interviewed President Bongo, to hear what he has to say about recent efforts with China, especially in infrastructure and education.
ALI BONGO ONDIMBA GABONESE PRESIDENT China and Gabon have had more than 40 years of diplomatic relations. I have witnessed the good relations between the two countries step by step.
First, Gabon is a raw-material-producing country. For us, it is especially important to develop the processing industry and enter a new phase. In this aspect, we received help from China and other friendly countries. The Chinese government provided us with a lot of help with the construction of infrastructure. Now, we hope that Chinese companies can invest directly in Gabon. Gabon's government will prioritize public-private partnerships, which is a task we are firmly committed to. In addition, due to the industrial transformation, the processing industry needs more professional talent. So we have to increase investment in education and training, which is also supported by Chinese partners.
I would like to emphasize the investments in education. We hope to receive a transfer of technology, knowledge and skills from our Chinese partners. Furthermore, we also have many momentous industries. Chinese enterprises can collaborate with us in new energy and clean energy to develop a green economy. At the same time, for those companies interested in direct investment, we are preparing to set up a framework for cooperation, including a system of laws and regulations. It will be easier for Chinese companies to conduct business in Gabon. We are looking forward to further cooperation with Chinese companies.
Gabon has always supported the one-China policy, which is vital for bilateral relations. Both of us keep our promises to each other, which has led to the success of the relationships between China and African countries, which are sincere, direct, and full of trust and respect. The key to our future is that we remain committed to achieving mutually beneficial outcomes.
