Several local organizations in Singapore are finding industrious ways to integrate migrant workers into the community.
There are over 1.3 million migrant workers in Singapore, more than a quarter of the population. Many of them come from Bangladesh, China and the Philippines, doing labor-intensive but essential work.
Aimed at migrant construction workers, the SDI Academy, a social enterprise run by Singaporean Sazzad Hossain, help workers practice their language skills. The same workers who work on construction sites by day, build a structure together at night, and can only converse in English while doing so.
Other organizations focus on the arts to bridge understanding between the two communities. The Migrant Worker Poetry competition uses poetry as a way for migrants to express their individuality, sharing personal stories from their lives.
An exhibition was also held at the National Arts Center to display personal items belonging to migrant workers, giving Singaporeans an opportunity to understand these people better.
