Renowned French actress Juliette Binoche is bringing her new musical drama on tour to four cities across China. Her new show is a solo performance with piano, done as a homage to French singer Barbara. Let's find out a little more.
With her new musical C'est Presque Rien, already huge in France, renowned French actress Juliette Binoche is getting set to embark on her four city China tour. She plans to hit the stage in Nanjing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing, while the entire show pays homage to French singer Barbara.
"Nanjing is hot, very hot."
For Juliette it was certainly a challenging process, but one she truly believes in.
JULIETTE BINOCHE ACTRESS "It's a little be mad to do that. I have to say. It's a lot of singing, but I like risks. And also this past year I shot four films, so I have very limited time. But at the same time, you have to take the risks as an artist. I think it's necessary. Actually, I wanted to stop 9 months ago. But my producer said "no way, you have to continue."
"Cause you already signed a contract?"
JULIETTE BINOCHE ACTRESS "Not true. Not yet, at that time. But his trust was beautiful. And so when you have people trusting you, it really gives you wings. And also the need of things, those lines, those words. Barbara's soul was very strong, so the need of telling the story is bigger. So it's not about me, it's not about the perfection of voice, it's not about that. It's about the actress, what I'm giving to her songs."
For the new show, Juliette is bringing 15 songs on stage. She's performing each song solo, both singing and dancing, with piano accompaniment from Vincent Leterme.
JULIETTE BINOCHE ACTRESS "Singing is hard because you show your soul, and if you're frightened it really shows. So you have to trust something in you, that is being able to get through it. If I had done like hundreds of shows behind me, it will be a different story. It's the first one. This is the first one I've done alone with 15 songs. Before I did a show last year, it was only 3 and half songs. That was ok. Because a whole hour and a half I was only talking, but this time it's really about the rhythm and the melody, and new songs as well that I chose. I can't blame anyone, I chose the songs."
