A UN-sponsored course for national planners has just concluded. The two-week training drew more than 40 senior officials from 26 countries. Its goal was to enhance and develop the UN's peacekeeping operations. It was the first time the course was held in China, a major contributor to the organization's global peace-keeping missions. Zheng Yibing has more.
A class of heated discussions.
This year's UN senior national planners course continues with a focus on executing multiple tasks, for a single goal.
RAFAEL BARBIERI SENIOR INSTRUCTOR, UN DEPT. OF PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS 14 "This platform, this course has the program to help national planners. Senior national planners that is in charge, that advisers to actually generate the force to prepare, to train, and deploy the troops in the countries they do peacekeeping operations."
It covers and involves negotiations, preparations, deployment, maintenance, and rotations for certain missions.
It also includes the most updated UN administrative and technical procedures.
Those attending here rely on these guidelines in the most complicated situations.
WARISARA JAIPIAM COLONEL, THAILAND "We learned about the multi-national environment that this thing will happen in the real world when we were to the missions."
SYED ATIF MUNAWAR SHAH COLONEL, PAKISTAN "At the end of the course, when I move back to my country, I would be more enlightened. I will be better handling the peacekeeping operations in my country."
Certificates for completion of the course were issued, as well as expectations for the future.
RAFAEL BARBIERI SENIOR INSTRUCTOR, UN DEPT. OF PEACEKEEPING OPERATIONS "Actions by the UN secretariat alone will not be enough. To improve the performance of the impact of our mission, success will depend on all of you."
The Pilot course was held back in 2016 in Serbia, while the second and third were held earlier this year in Cairo and now in Beijing.
It's perhaps a sign when world security becomes more complex, better coordination is required in peacekeeping missions, not only for ordinary people, but also for those protecting people around the world.
ZHENG YIBING BEIJING "The trainees will return to their countries with goodwill and friendship. And they hope the bond forged in Beijing will better serve the UN peacekeeping missions in the future. Zheng Yibing, CGTN, Beijing."
