Ethiopia State of Emergency: Military announces decree a day after PM's surprise resignation

Turning to Ethiopia, where a state of emergency has been declared by the military. The head of the military said they made the decision in order to stop the violence and unrest across the country. Angry protesters had taken to the streets after a surprise resignation by the country's prime minister on Thursday.
SIRAJ FEGESSA ETHIOPIAN MINISTER OF DEFENSE "Yesterday the council of ministers deliberated on the need for a declaration of a state of emergency and unanimously decided to declare the state of emergency and it has been put in place as of yesterday evening."
Fegessa said the state of emergency will last six months. And the country's parliament is expected to ratify it within two weeks. The resignation has made Hailemariam Desalegn the first sitting prime minister to quit in modern Ethiopian history.
Ethiopia is the second most populous nation in Africa, and is East Africa's biggest and fastest-growing economy. The country last saw a state of emergency between October 2016 and August 2017. During that time, curfews were in place, and around 29-thousand people were detained.
