As Brexit process makes some progress, numerous uncertainties and potential disagreements with multiple EU members have emerged. Early last week, the UK released its white paper on future plans with EU. And as more details come to light, the goal and topic of this official file might be more complex than it seems. Our reporter Mariam Zaidi has more.
MARIAM ZAIDI BRUSSELS The last week has seen some interesting developments in the Brexit process. The UK has a new Brexit negotiator in the form of Dominic Raab, a new UK white paper on the future relationship with the EU was unveiled, plus a new round of negotiations are currently underway in Brussels this week.
But as the saying goes, the devil is in the details. The agenda for the latest round of talks show that across Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, all discussions will focus on outstanding issues related to the withdrawal agreement. NOT on the future relationship. This comes despite the fact that last week, the EU's Lead Brexit Negotiator Michel Barnier said he welcomed the UK's position being put on paper and was looking forward to discussions with his new opposite number.
Banier did also state that the EU would analyse the UK White Paper and assess if it was workable and realistic. So perhaps, that's what's afoot. But also on Monday reports from the UK suggest that Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit blueprint may be dead in the water. Some of her disgruntled MP's are once again trying to push for a vote of no confidence in her. It's unlikely to succeed but shows once again that anything is far from easy when it comes to Brexit. Let's see what the week brings. Mariam Zaidi, CGTN Brussels.
