China-US Trade Tensions: Foreign ministry: Negotiations should be based on mutual respect
[]
At the top of our program. The Chinese foreign ministry says trade negotiations with the US should be based on mutual respect and fairness, instead of it being a one-sided request in a condescending manner. This was in response to the Trump administration urging China to lower tariffs on cars, and open its market to US financial services. China also called for unity within the World Trade Organization, to prevent the US from "wrecking" the organization with tariff actions.
China's top WTO envoy Zhang Xiangchen said Washington's tariff plans contradict the US's own commitments that such decisions go through the WTO Dispute Settlement Body. The US made these commitments at the WTO more than a decade ago.
