At least eight people were killed on Thursday in a stampede in the southeast African country of Malawi during the country's independence day celebrations, Reuters reported.
The fatalities include one adult and seven children, with minors as young as six said to have been killed.
At least 40 others are thought to have been wounded.
Malawi's President Peter Mutharika has offered his condolences and said the government will do all it can to assist the families of the victims.
The stampede occurred at the national stadium in the capital Lilongwe after rushed into the stadium to watch a soccer match which was part of the celebrations marking 53 years of the country's independence from British rule.
Local police said the death toll is expected to rise.
