Earlier today, Lindsey Vonn was looking to reclaim gold in the women's downhill. The Vancouver 2010 champ trying to go out on a high, as indications are that the 33-year-old was skiing her final Olympic race. The American though would be overshadowed, by close friend -- Sofia Goggia of Italy, who claims the first downhill women's title for her country.
The Italian, showing aggression and control in her run, in one of the marquee events of the Games, clocking one minute, 39.22 seconds to finish on top of the timesheets. Norway's giant slalom silver medallist Ragnhild Mowinckel was second. Vonn rounds out the podium in third to become the oldest female medallist in Alpine skiing at the Winter Games.
In women's figure skating, China's Li Xiangning scored 52.46 points during the short program, good enough to see her qualify for the free skate. Alina Zagitova set a world record, breaking the previous record set 15 minutes earlier. The Olympic Athlete from Russia scoring 82.92 points and moves into first ahead of compatriot Evgenia Medvedeva, who earlier scored 81.61 points.
In women's curling China were eliminated from playoff contention after falling to Sweden's Anna Hasselberg rink 8-4. Wang Bingyu's foursome needed a victory to have any hopes of making the final four, instead the loss sees the Chinese rink end the round robin portion of the tournament with a 4-5 record, and out of the playoff spots.
And a look at the medal table sees Norway and Germany tied with 11 golds, but the Scandinavians take top spot because of more silver and bronze. Canada now up to 9 gold after Brady Leman catpure the men's ski cross big final, earlier this afternoon. The Netherlands right behind, followed by France and USA. China have seven medals overall.
