Two Chinese live stream anchors, Yang Jie and Liu Guobiao, have been involved in charity fraud since 2016. They appeal for donations from netizens to help the elderly and children in poverty areas in Southwest China and broadcast it through live streaming.
However, it was revealed that as soon as the shows come to an end, they take the money back and leave the elderly and children with only a small amount of money and articles for daily use.
Yang and Liu got illicit profits for 216,000 yuan (around 33,000 US dollars) and 194,000 yuan (around 29,700 US dollars), respectively.
Local police arrested the two bogus charity live stream anchors on January 2017. The local judge on September sentenced the two anchors to three years in jail and a 30,000 yuan fine.
The defendants accepted the sentence without appeal.
