Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft Corporation and the richest man in the world, was appointed as a foreign academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), one of the most important think tanks in the country, on Monday.
Gates is one of the 18 international academicians added to the list this year, along with President of the London-based Royal Academy of Engineering Dame Ann Dowling and President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Leo Rafael Reif. He is the only one who does not work in a university or research center.
Gates was nominated for his work as the chairman of TerraPower, a nuclear reactor design company he helped set up in 2008. This new round of elections brings the number of foreigners at the national academy to 66.

The newly-appointed include experts from the UK, the US, Australia, Russia and Japan, and they are expected to work in promoting the development of engineering and international cooperation, the academy said.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), another top Chinese think tank, also revealed Tuesday its 77 newly-elected academicians, including 61 Chinese and 16 foreigners.
Nobel laureates Andre K. Geim and James Fraser Stoddart, together with another 14 scientists, are now foreign academicians at the institution.
The CAS and the CAE advise government and industry on key scientific and technological issues.
