Chinese President Xi Jinping will preside over the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in the eastern city of Qingdao next month. Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the announcement Monday morning during a press conference. Our Su Yuting has more.
Outlining the details of next month's 18th SCO summit of the Council of Heads of State.
Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said during the Qingdao summit that President Xi Jinping, together with leaders of other seven member states, four observer states, and leading officials of the United Nations and international organizations, will discuss cooperation plans.
Wang Yi said the SCO's eight member states, which now include India and Pakistan, will focus on regional security and stability, while drawing a new blueprint for shared development.
WANG YI CHINESE STATE COUNCILOR & FOREIGN MINISTER "Formulating new measures for common security, regional security and stability is a shared concern of SCO member states, to strike the Three Evil Forces, drug trafficking and cyber crimes are the priorities for cooperation. They will also be high on the agenda of the upcoming summit. During the summit, leaders will look into the international and regional security situation, identify priorities and underlying risks and challenges, and explore ways to elevate and broaden security cooperation."
Wang said President Xi and other leaders will sign and issue the Qingdao Declaration, and they will approve a Five Year Implementation Program for Long-term Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation, and the Next Three Year Cooperation Program Against Three Evil Forces. There will also be more than 10 cooperation documents covering security, economy and people-to-people exchanges.
While answering a question I posed on how the host city Qingdao can cooperate with SCO members in the future, Zhang Jiangting, Party Secretary of the CPC Qingdao Committee touched on preparation work for the SCO summit.
ZHANG JIANGTING PARTY SECRETARY, CPC QINGDAO COMMITTEE "We are working on a number of activities to promote trade and business exchanges. First, we are working on import exhibitions, building a platform to promote trade with SCO countries. We will expand imports from SCO members. Second, enhancing economic and trade cooperation. We will try to work with enterprise associations and committees to have regular forums in Qingdao. We will make sure think tank alliance activities will be based in Qingdao. Third, we are working on the plan to comprehensively advance the Belt and Road Initiative. The focus will be on two-way investment and trade with central and southern Asia, and emerging market countries."
