Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told his supporters in Ankara he wishes to further extend the emergency law in the country. The law was first introduced in the wake of a failed coup attempt last year.
"Tomorrow we are going to gather the state security council and discuss this issue and advise our government to extend the emergency law again,” Erdogan said.
Erdogan made the remark while attending the opening ceremony of a memorial statue in front of the country's parliament. The statue was built to commemorate the victims of the coup attempt.
Around 250 people were killed and the parliament was bombed before the coup was put down. Tens of thousands of people were arrested in the aftermath. Military interference was not uncommon to the country's politics before the attempt.
