Blockchain has taken the world by storm. And in Africa, the technology is set to revolutionize the film industry. Blockchain ledgers can help film-makers digitise ownership records, create transaction logs and make doing business simpler and cheaper with crypto currency. It was a hot topic at this year's Discop film market in Johannesburg. Sumitra Nydoo has more.
Copyright and piracy are big challenges for the film industry. Using blockchain technology could help slowly eliminate that. It helps move a digital asset onto a decentralised database, and creates an identity that cannot be erased.
LES ALLEN, HEAD BUSINESS DEV'T, DISCOMICS "An individual piece of information is owned by a particular film studio. Now they transfer that to somebody. That gets recorded in this blockchain ledger. And because there are so many copies of this around the world, you can't destroy that, so it's a permanent record of specific ownership."
Crypto Currency is virtual money used to trade on a blockchain platform. The film industry has started delving into Initial Coin Offerings to fund new production.
GEORGE EGBUONU, CEO FLAT PYRAMID "We're doing that right now. We're putting content on the blockchain. We are using the digital fingerprint. But we are doing it for 3D models which are used for animation, for games and all that. We gonna have it time stamped. So, you have some records. We gonna put digital fingerprints on it. So, now it's protected. And then users will now have access to a token, where the token, instead of using fiat currency, you will use tokens."
This new age technology helps create more transparency for content producers, and makes it easier to transact.
GEORGE EGBUONU, CEO FLAT PYRAMID "If you from an African country and you're trying to buy something from the U.S., you have to pay in dollars, and you have no access to dollars, by using a crypto asset, crypto currency digital coin or token, it allows anyone now can buy stuff and receive payment."
The technology is still being explored. And the infrastructure needs to be widened as the world adapts to a new form of business.
LES ALLEN, HEAD BUSINESS DEV'T, DISCOMICS "One of the biggest tech problems at the moment with blockchain technology is the volume of transactions, and how quickly they can be processed. That's why you need people mining for Bitcoin's because it will increase the number of transactions that get processed."
Hollywood has also used the growing trend as an opportunity to create content. SN CGTN JHB SA.
