The suspect in Monday’s Champs-Elysees attack had been on a security watch list since 2015, the Associated Press reported.
Police have also found weapons, ammunition, and gas tanks in the car that was used for the attack, which is now under investigation by France’s anti-terrorism prosecutors. The French interior ministry said it believes the attack was deliberate.
The driver rammed his vehicle into a police van on the French capital’s Champs-Elysees Avenue on Monday. The attacker died in the incident.
It’s the latest case of terror-related violence in France, which has been under a state of emergency following ISIL shootings that killed 130 people in 2015.
Paris plans to lift the state of emergency soon, and the government is expected to unveil new anti-terrorism legislation later this week.
