China's State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi says Nepal is a natural area for cooperation between China and India, as he invites India to join connectivity projects among the three nations. Wang made the remarks after meeting Nepal Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali in Beijing. Wu Guoxiu brings us more.
Nepali Foreign Minister Pradeep Kumar Gyawali says it's his first bilateral visit since assuming the post. And economic cooperation has been prioritized in his talks with Wang Yi.
PRADEEP KUMAR GYAWALI NEPALI FOREIGN MINISTER "As a very close and good friend of China, Nepal wants to be benefited from the progress China has achieved. So as we have discussed, we agreed in principle to enhance the economic cooperation. Personally I have a dream, to travel to China from Nepal across the Himalayas in a modern train, enjoying the scenic beauty of the Himalayas."
China and Nepal have agreed to start a feasibility study on building a cross-border railway. That's part of a cross-Himalaya connectivity network the two countries agreed to build.
WANG YI CHINESE STATE COUNCILOR, FOREIGN MINISTER "With long-term vision, such a connectivity network can cover our links through ports, railways, highways, aviation, electrical transmission and communications. We believe that such a network, when well-developed, can create conditions for an economic corridor connecting China, Nepal and India. We hope such cooperation will contribute to the development and prosperity of all three countries."
Gyawali is visiting China about a week after Nepali Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli was in India. Wang Yi dismissed the notion that Nepal is trying to balance its relations with China and India with this visit. He says Nepal stands as a natural beneficiary for cooperation and development from China and India. And it's a logical desire that both China and India should support the development of Nepal.
