5G technology is entering the public domain at an unstoppable speed. On June 17th and 18th, the seventh Global 5G Event takes place in Valencia, Spain's third largest city. It is attracting more than seventy 5G companies from around the world. Our reporter Xi Jia reports from the venue.
The technology of 5G will definitely change ordinary people's lives in the near future. With its much larger bandwidth and low latency time, 5G tech will not only enable us to download an HD movie within seconds, it could also herald the rise of things such as remote surgery as well as the wider use of Virtual and Augmented Reality.
PROFESSOR NARCIS CARDONA DIRECTOR OF ITEAM RESEARCH INSTITUTE "5G is a revolution to the industry because this is the first generation of mobile networks that has been designed for the industrial applications for machines, for robut, for automotive. In 5G, we are going to have immediate reaction, so we have very low latency, and this means we can connect any kind of critical device that needs this immediate reaction."
Autonomous vehicles, holograms, remote robotic arms and a Virtual Cave. These applications are a product of 5G technology and are being showcased by the 5G SA network which has been provided by the Chinese telecommunications technology provider ZTE. ZTE has been working with telecommunication operators as well as Spanish Universities since last year and the application of the revolutionary 5G technology is the fruit of their collaboration.
HU KUN VICE PRESIDENT OF ZTE CORPORATION "Through this partnership, the university has the great opportunities to experiment the use case of 5G technology, also they have the best platform of their research on 5G. As for the Spanish operators, they have the opportunity to test to experiment to foster the use cases which is very keen for the 5G commercialization in Spain."
On Saturday, Spain rolled out a commercial 5G network as Vodafone Spain launched the service in 15 Spanish cities in cooperation with Chinese tech giant Huawei. Before Spain, the only other European countries to commercialize 5G were Switzerland and the UK.
The Global 5G Event hosted by the 5G Infrastructure Association and supported by the European Commission offers participants lively debates around 5G standards, large-scale trials and deployment. It brings together the world industrial associations in the field including IMT-2020, 5G-Forum, 5G-MF, 5G-Brazil and 5G-Americas.
The agenda of the conference includes government policy, research and technological trends as well as questions around what's needed for 5G commercial success. Beyond 5G, it also focuses on how to realize smart networks.
XI JIA VALENCIA, SPAIN "Six years ago, the European Commission allocated fifty million euros for research on 5G technology to be completed by 2020. Six years later, in 2019, Europe has started to realize its blueprint through collaboration. Xi Jia, CGTN, Valencia, Spain."
