In more football news, Nigeria's amputee team will make its debut at the World Cup in Mexico later this year. The World Amputee Football Federation had suspended the country from participating after it failed to pay its membership fee in 2013, but following the making of up to date payments, the African's look all set to travel to South America. CGTN's Kelechi Emekalam has more.
An early training for Nigeria's National amputee football team. They are getting ready for the 2018 Amputee Football World Cup. Mexico will host the global soccer event from October but this team, having not participated in international contest 5 years now, they would need double effort to stand a chance. And that explains why they are here 6 months before the World cup.
GBENGA DOSUNMU NIGERIA COACH "I believe if you have a good training time with the team and they have long duration of camping, I believe it would work out fine."
The Special Eagles as they are known here had their membership suspended for failure to pay membership fee in 2013. The Ban was only lifted recently after Nigeria paid its outstanding dues. Nigeria's noncommitment to the game has been putting a strain on Players and the team is hoping that would now be a thing of the past.
BLESSING OTUTU NIGERIA PLAYER "If they can give us the encouragement even calling us together, put us in camp, at least our aim is to win World cup. Whereby we can get to nations cup and play semi-finals with all those people. Like Angola went to World cup in Mexico and cane second so likewise if they give us the opportunity we can win the World cup because we have the boys that can win the world cup in Nigeria here."
KELECHI EMEKALAM ABUJA, NIGERIA "Nigeria's national amputee soccer team was founded in 2005 but they have not had much success outside Africa. The sport has very little interest and so has been the appetite to sponsor them. Countries like Angola, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ghana have all gone to represent the continent at the World Cup and now the special eagles are looking to make their mark. Kelechi. Emekalam CGTN. Abuja. Nigeria."
