Beijing Design Week (BJDW) returns to the Chinese capital this week, presenting new fashions, art and creativity from across China and the wider world. The annual event also brings a series of exhibitions, lectures and design markets to Beijing from September 21 to October 7, with the theme of “Design Plus”.
Entering its eighth edition, Beijing Design Week aims to offer insights into the projected future of the city's urban areas, accompanying environment and design infrastructure. The main body of this year's Design Week covers many cultural creative places in Beijing, Tianjin and the surrounding Hebei Province.
Wang Yudong, director of BJDW, said, "Nearly 1,000 activities will be held in venues across the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The event brings a variety of artworks and products by domestic designers as well as international creatives. Design Week serves as an important platform for people to communicate and exchange ideas with each other."
BJDW sees various exhibitions hosted across the city, in spaces and districts that themselves raise interesting questions about how Beijing’s rapid urban transformation affects art, design, social and urban planning. One exhibition highlighting these concepts is “Future Home-Smart, Caring, Green”, which focuses on child development, the aging population, environment and smart homes.
Wang Linpeng, one of the participants, said. "This is the first time we have taken part in Beijing Design Week. Our exhibition focuses on the conception of our future lives, such as coexisting with nature and building ecological and smart homes. We are trying to showcase our efforts to help people live a healthy life, and build a society where people and nature live side-by-side in harmony."
The event also sees international designs being brought to Beijing. The “Handmade in Germany” exhibition showcases works from famous German brands, as well as the country's master craftsmen, contemporary artists and art studios.
Having been granted the title of City of Design by UNESCO in 2012, Beijing's Design Week initiatives have reinforced the Chinese capital’s position at the cutting edge of global design and culture.
