The 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China will take place on October 18. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called it a key meeting at a crucial time for the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
The meeting is likely to have a considerable bearing on China's future and people's lives. CGTN has been speaking to people across the country to find out more about their thoughts and expectations for the upcoming event.
For ordinary people, improving their livelihoods is a key priority. In particular, high property prices have been singled out.
"I hope the congress can solve the problem of housing prices, so ordinary people like us will be able to purchase an apartment that we want, and be able to lead a fairly comfortable life, " said a resident of Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province.
With the number of elderly people in China on the rise, many seniors are concerned about their retirement prospect.
A resident living in Shanghai said, “Because of the one-child policy, many families only have one child, some of whom do not live locally, so we hope volunteers from the community can help us. Additionally, there are a lot of seniors in hospitals, but the number of beds is limited, so we hope that can be improved as well.”
Some small business owners hope the meeting will create a better business environment.
“I hope the meeting can provide us with supportive policies to help with taxation, operation and medical treatment for our employees. These beneficial policies will help our businesses grow faster, allowing us to create more jobs, ” said a Shanghai resident.
Some people, particularly those living in big cities, are concerned about heavy traffic and limited public transportation.
A young woman living in Beijing said, “ I hope the meeting can help us with transportation. The metro is so crowded that I sometimes can't even get onto the carriage when I go to work, and people push each other all the time. I sometimes take the bus, but it doesn't always run on time, and makes me late for work. ”
People hope their voices will be heard by the delegates, and that their problems can be resolved efficiently.
“I hope that the delegates - who are elected by the people to represent the interests of the people - will be able to solve some real problems for the general public,” said another from Sichuan.
