We start here in Beijing, where President and CPC leader Xi Jinping has welcomed the leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Kim Jong Un. The unofficial visit lasted from Sunday to Wednesday.
This was Kim Jong Un's first known journey abroad since he took office in 2011. It comes ahead of proposed talks with South Korea and the US.
Xi Jinping held talks with Kim at the Great Hall of the People. There was a welcoming banquet for Kim and his wife Ri Sol Ju, and they watched an art performance.
The Korean Peninsula issue dominated discussions.
Xi said China sticks to the goal of denuclearization, and safeguarding peace and stability on the peninsula. Resolving problems should be done through dialogue and consultation.
China calls on all parties to support the improvement of inter-Korean ties, and take concrete efforts to facilitate peace talks.
Kim said the DPRK is committed to denuclearization, and the country is determined to transform the inter-Korean relationship into one of reconciliation and cooperation. He also confirmed willingness for a summit with the US.
The leaders also addressed improving bilateral ties.
Xi made four proposals. First, continue high-level exchanges. Second, make full play of strategic communication, including maximizing the important role of party-to-party exchanges. Third, advance peaceful development, and make joint efforts to contribute to regional peace and stability. Fourth, cement the popular will foundation for China-DPRK friendship.
DPRK state news reports Kim called the meeting with Xi a milestone in improving bilateral ties. It says both sides agreed maintaining friendly bilateral ties is a common strategic choice.
