Carrie Lam, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), said that she was encouraged by the speech made by General Secretary Xi Jinping at the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. She said it's inspiring to hear the review of the achievements of the past five years and to look forward to the future.
Lam said that she was most concerned about the part related to Hong Kong in Xi's speech.
Xi said in his speech, "We must ensure both the central government’s overall jurisdiction over the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and a high degree of autonomy in the two regions. We should ensure that the principle of 'One Country, Two Systems' remains unchanged, is unwaveringly upheld, and in practice is not bent or distorted."

Lam said that since Hong Kong returned to the motherland, the implementation of "One Country, Two Systems" has been very successful. Hong Kong can benefit from the country's deepening reform and opening up and strong support from the central government; at the same time, Hong Kong can maintain a unique system.
Lam also pointed out that although Hong Kong had experienced two financial crises, the city managed to get through, thanks to the country's support and its efforts.
