[]
The number of people evacuated from Eastern Ghouta in Syria has soared. Over 30-thousand have been bussed out of the one-time rebel stronghold near the capital Damascus in the past six days. The week-long evacuation is part of a deal brokered by Russia. Alaa Ebrahim tells us more.
ALAA EBRAHIM DAMASCUS "According to the Syrian official state news agency SANA, 75 more buses were getting ready to help evacuate nearly a thousand rebel fighters along with their families in the eastern Ghouta region near Damascus.
Thousands of people have already been evacuated from the rebel enclave. In the next 48 hours, the Syrian army will be in control of an estimated 90% of eastern Ghouta, according to the Syrian army central command. The only part of Ghouta out of government control will be the town of Duma, home to one of the largest rebel factions in Syria known as the Army of Islam, a radical Islamic group with nearly 10-thousand fighters. Sources close to the government say a deal with the rebel group to leave Duma is in its final stages. Sources in Islam Army tell CGTN they are in talks with the Russians through the UN and that things are heading in the right direction. Since the government began its offensive in February, the Syrian army says a 100-thousand civilians have fled the embattled suburb of Damascus and are now staying in government-run shelters. The U.N. in Syria says the number of internally displaced persons hosted in shelters has decreased by 35% as many families are joining relatives in Damascus and the countryside. Meanwhile, two members of the U.S.-led coalition were killed on Friday when a road side bomb went off in Syria. The attack left at least one American dead. Five other members of the coalition were wounded in the same attack. Alaa Ebrahim - CGTN - Damascus."
