The FAO’s Friday meeting of the Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) on Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) in Rome confirmed Zhagana Farming, Forestry and Animal Husbandry Compound System in Gansu Province and the Huzhou Mulberry Dyke Fishpond System in east China’s Zhejiang Province, both of which were formally designated as GIAHS sites. /CNS Photo
A cluster of rice terrace areas, which is located in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and Hunan, Fujian and Jiangxi Provinces, was also designated as global agricultural heritages, together with Xiajin Ancient Mulberry Wood in Shandong Province but they required a final confirmation from a panel of judges. /China Plus Photo
In order to safeguard and support the world’s agricultural heritage systems, the FAO started an initiative for identification and the dynamic conservation of GIAHS, which now promotes public understanding, awareness and both national and international recognition of Agricultural Heritage systems. /China Plus Photo
