A 7.9-magnitude earthquake hit 280km southeast of Kodiak, Alaska at 09:31 GMT on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
A tsunami warning was first issued for parts of Alaska and Canada’s British Columbia following the strong earthquake, but was later cancelled.
Tsunami watches were issued along the US west coast as well, including the entire coastlines of California and Oregon, and parts of Washington state and Hawaii, but they have all been cancelled.
The USGS put the epicenter of the earthquake at a depth of 25km.
The quake was originally reported to be of 8.2 magnitude.
Some coastal residents got an emergency alert telling them to go to high ground or move inland as an "extraordinary threat to life or property" was possible, according to local officials.
No damage or casualties have been reported so far.
