The durian is one of the most popular fruits in Asia, but they are as controversial as they are popular, thanks to strong smell. But now, a Thai university has found a way to eliminate the durian's bad smell.
Thailand is the biggest durian grower and largest exporter. Thai durian are known for their quality, especially the sought-after Mon Thong variety. However, the Durian’s strong odor can be off-putting and in a number of Asian countries, it’s banned in public places, as well as trains, buses, and airplanes.
A Bangkok university developed a coating, made from natural fibers and carbon which they say can almost completely mask the smell.
"My coating will help stop the smell because people don’t like the smell. If the market is OK with a little smell we can coat it one time, but some markets need no odor so we coat it two or three times, it can keep people from the smell of the durian,” said Voraphat Luckanatinvong, a professor from Thammasat University.
