Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has sat down with senior members of his administration to discuss what programs and projects to prioritize to rebuild the economy. CGTN's Beryl Ooro has more.
Sudan's Ministry for Finance and Economy is looking for projects with quick returns. Most are in the oil, agriculture and infrastructure sectors.
MOHAMED SULEIMAN AL-RIKABI SUDANESE FINANCE AND ECONOMIC PLANNING MINISTER "To give priority to quick return and lower-cost projects -- those contribute to bridging the external and internal gaps. Several projects were reviewed by the ministers in their respective fields."
U.S. sanctions, the secession of South Sudan and lower global oil prices have affected the country's oil sector. The ministry of petroleum and gas is planning to build a new refinery in the city of Port Sudan to mitigate these factors.
AZHARI ABDUL-GADIR ABDALLA SUDANESE PETROLEUM AND GAS MINISTER "I'm talking about a new refinery in Port Sudan. This refinery can be established through financing or through the so-called Build-operate-transfer system, in which an investor comes to the country and builds and establishes the refinery, and then benefits from the revenues while Sudan benefits from the agreed fees."
Although there are many challenges, the government is determined to get the economy back on track. Beryl Ooro, CGTN.
