Chinese Premier Li Keqiang will pay official visits to Indonesia and Japan. He will also attend the 7th China-Japan-ROK leaders' meeting in Japan. For more, let me bring in our reporter Meng Qingsheng in Beijing.
What is his agenda in Indonesia? And what is the focus and background for the trilateral summit in Japan?
MENG QINGSHENG BEIJING Well, Pan Deng, today Premier Li Keqiang will start his official visit to Indonesia and later on Japan, marking his first overseas trip after the reshuffle of the State Council in March. Officials from China's Foreign Ministry said earlier this week that the premier's six-day visit is aimed at promoting regional cooperation amid rising protectionism and anti-globalization sentiment. A number of deals are expected to come out from this trip, focusing on projects under the Belt and Road Initiative and the East Asian Economic Community.
During his stay in Indonesia, Premier Li will make proposals on strengthening cooperation when meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo. Currently, the two countries are advancing projects such as the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway and industrial parks, in addition to cooperation among energy and Internet businesses. Li will also meet Lim Jock Hoi, secretary-general of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. After the first leg of his trip in Indonesia, the premier will attend the 7th China-Japan-South Korea leaders' meeting to be held in Japan on the morning of May 9th. Premier Li, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will attend that event, jointly meet with the press, and address the opening ceremony of the trilateral business summit. Since its inception 19 years ago, the three countries have enhanced cooperation in fields like trade, culture, education and disaster management. They have also signed the China-Japan-South Korea Investment Agreement and held 13 rounds of Free Trade Agreement negotiations.
During his stay in Japan, Li will hold talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, meet with Emperor Akihito and engage with people from political parties and all walks of life. The premier will make proposals for pragmatic economic cooperation, particularly in areas such as social security, technological innovation and the sharing economy. In fact, the expectations are high on the visit, as it will be the first official trip by a Chinese premier within the last 8 years. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the two countries.
Back to you, Pan Deng.
Thank you very much.
