South Africa's emerging black film-making talents are set for a major boost. The government has set aside about 7.5 million US dollars over the next few months to support upcoming black filmmakers.
This incentive is expected to nurture them to take up big productions that will assist in the creation of jobs.
The Trade and Industry Department has partnered with the Industrial Development Cooperation, National Film and Video Foundation, the public broadcaster and provincial film commissions, to assist filmmakers.
The department believes the film industry has enormous potential in bringing the necessary currency into the economy.
Since its inception, the incentive scheme has managed to support over 40 emerging filmmakers. Some filmmakers say the financial assistance allowed producers to compete locally and internationally with their foreign counterparts.
