This year's SCO summit takes place amid tumultuous geopolitical times in Asia. Let's take a look at some of the challenges member states are facing.
1. Denuclearization of Korean Peninsula
A nuclear test site demolished, all missile tests suspended. Is the threat of nuclear war on the peninsula in decline?
A high-stakes summit.
A peace treaty long overdue. Is the Korean Peninsula on track towards denuclearization?
Will diplomatic efforts proceed?
2. Fate of Iran nuclear deal
A deal to tackle the threat of nuclear weapons.
A deal unilaterally scrapped by the US. Tougher American sanctions.
Tehran's harsher stance.
Will other international powers manage to save the deal? Or will it be the pretext for war?
3. Palestine-Israel conflict
Widespread violence as the US declares Jerusalem, Israel's capital and moves its embassy to the holy city.
Over 100 Palestinian people have been killed this year alone.
While Israel's new settlements continue to be built, will we see a ceasefire between Palestine and Israel? Or will the region continue to be a flashpoint as hostilities intensify?
4. Syria conflict Syria
A country torn apart by years of war, now suffering from growing outside intervention, US-led airstrikes, Turkish operations.
An arena for Saudi Arabia and Iran.
As government forces gain ground, will the country become prosperous again? Or will it continue to be a battlefield?
5. Extremism
Afghanistan, where the war on terror began.
An olive branch for talks with the Taliban.
Frequent suicide bombings, will there be a political settlement?
Claiming victory against ISIL, Non-stop acts of terror. What will eradicate extremism, separatism, and terrorism?
And how to deal with trade protectionism, cyber threats and narcotics?
How will the SCO summit address these challenges facing Asia?
