Chinese lawmakers have adopted amendments to the country's Constitution during the NPC's third plenary session. This is the first revision of the country's fundamental law in 14 years. Wang Yuan has more.
After nearly 3000 lawmakers voted, the proposed amendments to the Constitution were passed. President Xi Jinping, among other National People's Congress officials, oversaw the balloting. The current Constitution has been previously amended four times since it was adopted in 1982. The new amendments include the leading role of the Communist Party and the creation of a new state organ to combat corruption.
SHEN CHUNYAO, CHAIRMAN LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS COMMISSION, NPC STANDING COMMITTEE "The amendment of the constitutional amendment is an important measure to improve the leadership system of the state, to maintain the authority of the Party Central Committee with President Xi Jinping as the core and to maintain long-term stability of the party and the state."
The People's Republic of China enacted its first Constitution in 1954. It is the fundamental law of the state and holds supreme legal authority. The revision is a major decision made by the CPC Central Committee. It must ensure the Constitution's continuity and stability as well as authority.
