The eight-day National Day holiday, also called the "Super Golden Week," has brought a new wave of tourism to Hong Kong. According to the data released by the Immigration Department of Hong Kong, the tourism industry in Hong Kong continues to show signs of growth.
During the first three days of the National Day holiday, there were over 200,000 visitors from the mainland to Hong Kong per day.
On the first day of the holiday, there were 206,000 visitors from the mainland, hitting the highest in five years, a significant increase of 9.4% over the same period of last year.
Dong Yaozhong, director-general of the Hong Kong Travel Industry Council said yesterday that the number of group trips during this year's “Golden Week” has risen sharply from last year. The number of group tours has increased from an average of 120 groups per day to an average of 220 to 250 per day this year.
He believes that this links to the improving social environment and visitors' increased confidence in Hong Kong.
Dong Yaozhong said that shopping habits of independent travelers from the mainland have also changed from mainly purchasing top branded goods to more practical goods, such as clothing, cosmetics and audio-visual equipment.
