Customs officers in Hong Kong have seized 830,000 suspected illicit cigarettes at a border control point.
The cigarettes, with an estimated market value of about 2.2 million Hong Kong dollars (about 280,000 US dollars) and a duty potential of about 1.6 million Hong Kong dollars, were seized Friday at Man Kam To Control Point, Hong Kong’s Customs and Excise Department said in a press release.
Officers intercepted an incoming container truck declared as carrying assorted goods at the control point and found the cigarettes in 104 carton boxes in the container.
The 53-year-old male driver was arrested, and the truck was seized. Investigation is ongoing.
Under Hong Kong law, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo may be fined up to 2 million Hong Kong dollars and imprisoned for seven years.
