Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas heads to Russia Monday hoping to secure President Vladimir Putin's support on the Jerusalem issue. After Washington recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital last December, Abbas has refused any contact with the United States.

His Russia visit comes two weeks after a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Abbas's diplomatic advisor Majdi Khalidi says the trip also aims to replace the US in mediating talks between the Israelis and Palestinians.
