Now, we say goodbye to the world's last male Northern White Rhino, "Sudan". He was euthanized over age-related medical complications. He left behind a daughter and grand-daughter who are now the last two members of their species. But as CGTN's Leslie Mirungu reports, there's a sliver of hope Sudan's legacy will continue.
Aged 45, and the last of his kind, Sudan even had his own profile on popular dating app Tinder. Conservationists hoped it would raise the money needed for fertility treatments after all attempts at getting him to mate naturally failed.
Sudan was at an advanced age and was receiving treatment. Early on Tuesday, the Ol-Pejeta conservancy informed his fans that he died. He was very weak at the end, according to the conservancy. And he was suffering. The decision needed to be made to put him down.
But his legacy lives one. Sudan was a grandfather -- and leaves behind his daughter Najin and granddaughter Fatu -- the last of their kind. There's still hope to revive the species, though. Sudan's genetic material has been saved. In the future, technology may be used to bring back the male Northern white rhino. For now, though, there are none left. Leslie Mirungu, CGTN.
