Uganda has an abundance of wildlife, some of which is endangered. Various strategies are being adopted to raise awareness among the public. A budding artist is using art as an effective and engaging platform to do so, as Leon Ssenyange reports.
Drew Tete, real name Andrew Odoch Umahtete. The 34-year-old has been painting for several years now. His exhibition 'the untamed wild' depicts some of Uganda's wildlife.
ANDREW 'DREW TETE' ODOCH ARTIST "When you see the beautiful wildlife heritage of Uganda, Africa, you just wonder the magnificence of the creator, it inspires when you see the birds fly, the animals, the stories about their lives, it's so rich."
This year, was the first time he has put his work on display.
LEON SSENYANGE KAMPALA, UGANDA "The pieces here are both inspiring and intriguing. The artist behind these drawings hopes his works can bring more attention to the important issues around wildlife."
One of his paintings featured the endangered mountain gorilla. There have been successful efforts by both government and private-sector to protect the primate. Odoch is optimistic more can be done."
ANDREW 'DREW TETE' ODOCH ARTIST "Down the line, our children's children may not see these animals. If we don't take care of our environment, so I think it's very pertinent that as we enjoy we understand that we also have a role to play to protect this beautiful wildlife."
Odoch is also encouraging ardent lovers of art to express their concerns for wildlife. And there was something to take away for some.
"This is who we are as a country, it speaks of our identity as a nation so, art, wildlife and Uganda, that's who we are."
The exhibition will go on for three days. And getting the message across, Odoch says will leave him and hopefully many others fulfilled. LS, CGTN, KAMPALA, UGANDA.
