China and Germany have been cooperating for quite some time, especially in advanced manufacturing projects favored by both nations. Several of these projects are in Shanghai, including business-to-business cooperation and academic exchanges. Mi Jiayi has more.
Lingang New City at the southeast tip of Shanghai is the focus of a large number of joint China-Germany projects. Siemens is one of the first German companies to settle in the area. The company manufactures large wind turbine blades, and then ships them to nearby offshore wind power plants.
ALEXANDRA WOCKEN, HEAD OF FINANCE SIEMENS GAMESA RENEWABLE ENERGY "China is one of the growing markets worldwide, and Germany being an expert in many industries, it's very important that we have a very close relationship between Germany and China. I think it's good both ways. Lingang has very close location to the port, so this is why the company chose Lingang."
Wocken says that as business ties between Chinese and German companies have strengthened, they have been hiring more and more professionals to work in their China offices. Additional German companies have set up factories and offices in Lingang over the past ten years, just as Siemens has. As a result, more Germans have been coming to work in China. Benjamin Wenzel is one of them, and arrived in Shanghai just a few months ago.
BENJAMIN WENZEL GERMAN EXPAT "I see of course the improvements in Germany, of the people, of their picture, or their opinion about China. I think that more and more people are taking this opportunity to work abroad."
MI JIAYI SHANGHAI "There are more than 15 German companies in the Lingang New City. One important part of the China Germany cooperation is helping grooming talents for these high tech firms. And that comes down to cooperation in education."
Shanghai Dianji University began working with the Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences from Germany two years ago. Each year, 60 students are selected from more than 1,000 freshmen at Dianji to enter this special program, where they study German and majors related to smart manufacturing.
China and Germany issued a cooperation outline in 2014, laying out the two countries' plan to work together in high-tech areas like aircraft manufacture, sustainable energy development, electric cars and other manufacturing areas.
