Egyptian authorities briefly cut off ferry services to al-Warraq Island on the River Nile in Cairo on Monday, following clashes between police and island residents.
At least one person has been killed and dozens injured in clashes between police and residents of a Nile island in Cairo, when security forces attempted to demolish illegal buildings, the Ministry of Interior said in a statement. According to the health ministry, at least 19 protesters suffered respiratory distress and impacts from rubber bullets.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is spearheading a campaign to end illegal use of state-owned land in May.
About 90 thousand people live on the 1,300-acre al-Warraq island, said Mahmoud Jaffar Salman, a former member of parliament to Giza, which the island is part of.
