The spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry slammed the "Taiwan Relations Act" on Friday, reiterating China's position that the one-China Policy is the basis of the Sino-US relationship.
The "Taiwan Relations Act," also known as "Taiwan Travel Act," was passed by the US House of Representatives recently, calling on the White House to "encourage visits between the US and Taiwan officials at all levels of government."
"Sino-China relationship as well as Taiwan Strait situation will be greatly interfered if this got approved," spokesperson Geng Shuang said. "We strongly oppose [the bill], and has asked the US side for solemn representations."
However, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson did mention that the US remains committed to the one-China Policy just a day ago during his meeting with Chinese State Council Yang Jiechi in Washington, D.C.
Although the act has no legal enforcement, it severely violates the one-China Principle and regulation of the China-US three Joint Communiqués, according to Geng.
The communiqués, signed in the 1970s and 1980s, clearly states that “there is but one China and Taiwan is a part of China.”
Geng hopes to see the US keep its promise on dealing with the Taiwan issue through keeping the stability of the relationship between the two countries as well as the Taiwan Strait situation.
