Just weeks ago, the fate of the summit was thrown into uncertainty. CGTN's Chuck Tinte looks back on how the two leaders finally came together?
DONALD TRUMP US PRESIDENT "I decide to terminate the summit in Singapore on June 12."
A strong willingness to hold the summit. And even after Trump cancelled it, the DPRK was still open to talks.
"We express our willingness to sit down face-to-face with the US and resolve issues, any time and in any format."——DPRK Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan
DONALD TRUMP US PRESIDENT "It is about attitude, it's about willingness to get things done."
Gestures toward denuclearization. Frequent high-level exchanges. And offering a more positive tone before the meeting.
DONALD TRUMP US PRESIDENT "I don't even want to use the term 'maximum pressure' anymore because I don't want to use that term, because we are getting along. You see the relationship, we're getting."
Kim even wrote a letter to Trump.
DONALD TRUMP US PRESIDENT "It was very warm letter, very nice letter. I appreciate it very much."
Now the world is counting down to the high-stakes summit.
DONALD TRUMP US PRESIDENT "It is a one-time shot. I think it will work out well. That's why I feel positive because it makes so much sense."
The determination to hold the summit has been demonstrated. Now it's time for the leaders to follow through.
