Xi made the remarks in his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Hamburg on Saturday.
The Chinese president said the two countries are great neighbors, and because of this it is critical to push bilateral relations in the right direction as it can affect people of the two nations, Asia and the rest of the world.
Xi emphasized that relations between China and Japan have faced some tough times during past 45 years, leaving experiences that are beneficial to both countries.
The Chinese president expressed his hope that Japan could show its willingness to improve their bilateral relations through political and concrete actions so that the two countries could have a long-lasting friendship.
Xi also mentioned the four political documents and four principles that China and Japan reached when normalizing their ties 45 years ago, describing them as the precondition for the healthy relationship between the two countries.
Xi said that there won't be any compromise on issues related to history and Taiwan, urging Japan to honor its words.
Xi said that China-Japan economic and trade cooperation could be beneficial to the mutual relationship.
China welcomes Japan to join in Belt & Road pragmatic collaboration and hopes that the two countries can exchange more on the fields of culture, education, media, locality, and teenagers.
On his part, Abe expressed readiness to display foresight and inject momentum to the ties with China, as China and Japan are the second and the third largest economies in the world.
Japan eyes high-level exchanges with China, and is looking forward to cooperation on trade, finance, and tourism, Abe said.
He promised that there is no change in Japan's stance on Taiwan, which was stated in a joint statement issued by Japan and China in 1972.
