China’s customized travel market grew rapidly last year as more than 6 million Chinese made their first journey to Europe, according to a report revealed at first Business Summit of Ctrip Customized Travel in the Hungarian capital of Budapest.
The report conducted by online tour operator Ctrip.com and China Outbound Tourism Research Institute (COTRI) said some 40 percent of customized travel by Chinese tourists was for outbound travel plans, among which Europe accounted for 10 percent.
“China’s travel market is booming which offers a new business model and opportunities for products and services in customized travel” said Kane Xu, CEO of Ctrip Customized Travel.
A total of 9.3 percent of Chinese tourists chose Europe as their outbound destination, making it the second most popular continent for Chinese tourists. Britain, Italy, France, Russia and Greece were the top five destinations for customized travel, the report added.
With a year-on-year growth of 130 percent, Europe has seen an increasing number of Chinese tourists looking for unique and personalized travel experiences, especially trips that are in-depth, slow pace, private and focus on leisure.
“The demand and consumption of customized travel by Chinese consumers is unique and represents a leading global market segment. It is characterized by its popularity, youthfulness and high growth rates,” said Wolfgang Georg Arlt, the director of COTRI.
Fifty percent of customized travel departs from China’s Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou, while second-tier cities like Harbin, Wuhan, Fuzhou, Nanjing and Hangzhou ranked as the fastest-growing cities with a year-on-year growth exceeding 100 percent.
