Chinese National Swimming Championships: Fu Yuanhui dispels retirement rumours
[]
As we just showed you, Fu Yuanhui finished third in the 100-metre backstroke. The 22-year-old not at 100-percent because of a nagging injury, that some believe could have put an early end to her career. Our Mike Fox has the story.
A bandage on Fu Yuanhui's left shoulder is hard to miss. The swimmer amongst the biggest stories at the National Championships in Shanxi. Known for her extremely outgoing personality, Fu would prefer to hide her injury behind her big smile. After a disappointing start to the campaign which almost led to her retirement, Fu bounced back to claim gold in the 50-meter backstroke. That success altered her mindset about giving up the sport.
FU YUANHUI 50m BACKSTROKE WINNER "From the bottom of my heart, I don't want to just retire, but some external factors could force me to make that choice. I still have dreams, so I hope I can achieve more."
After shrugging off a decision to retire, Fu finished in third in the 100-meter backstroke, the same event she won bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Her shoulder injury still causes her pain, but the 22-year-old now is just focusing on performing in the pool.
FU YUANHUI OLYMPIC BRONZE MEDALLIST - 100m BACKSTROKE "I hope I can swim, and be happy when I'm in the water. If I put too much pressure on myself, my performance won't bring joy to the people who are out there to see me swim. So, first of all, I hope to compete, and be happy."
A positive mind is always helpful in healing wounds. The triumph in the 50-meter backstroke means Fu qualified for the Jakarta Asian Games in September. The talented swimmer hopes to be at her peak for that competition. Mike Fox, CGTN.
