At this year’s General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) in the Mexican resort of Cancun, which kicked off on Monday, how to handle political crisis in Venezuela is a central issue discussed by most diplomats.
Foreign ministers and delegates from the organization attended the meeting besides Venezuela in the opening ceremony. The three-day meeting discussed the development in the Americas, human rights, opportunities and challenges for women leaders, and national legal systems.
As the day went on, delegates from across the Americas were unable to reach a consensus on the resolution to help a peace settlement in the South American nations. Top diplomats debated whether the efforts to guide Venezuela through its political crisis could be seen as a violation of one of the founding principles of this organization.
Venezuela's foreign minister, Delcy Rodriguez, announced on Monday to withdraw Venezuela from the organization, but returned to the summit and called the US-led effort a clear act of interventionism.
